Braces are used to correct numerous issues, including crooked, overcrowded and overlapping teeth. Malocclusion, a condition characterized by the difference in the size of the upper and lower jaw, is another dental issue that requires the use of braces. When the upper jaw is larger, it creates an overbite. If the lower jaw is disproportionately smaller, the condition is known as an underbite. These problems may occur because of accidents and habits like sucking a thumb as well as the early or late loss of baby teeth. Genetics can also play a part. If another family member required braces, it is likely that the children will also need the dental appliance. Once it has been determined that your child needs braces, our orthodontist will recommend the type that will produce the best results.
There are several basic types of kids braces. Consisting of steel and wires, traditional metal braces are the most recognizable form of these corrective appliances. Modern metal braces are considerably smaller and more comfortable than versions used years ago. While these braces are the most noticeable, they are also the most effective.
Ceramic braces are fabricated from clear or tooth-colored ceramic brackets instead of metal. They may also use tooth-colored wires to blend in more naturally and be less conspicuous. Although ceramic braces are less noticeable and can be just as effective as metal braces, they are typically not used as kids braces because they break more easily, and most kids don’t have the discipline to take the extra precautions to prevent breakage.
Clear aligners are invisible, but may not be as effective as metal braces. Unlike other braces, clear aligners can be removed for brief periods if they become uncomfortable. Again, clear aligners are typically not used as kids braces because they require extra handling and can be easily lost, especially by children.
