Removable orthodontic appliances are appliances that are customized to fit your mouth to aid in your orthodontic treatment plan. Unlike braces and other types of appliances that are attached to your teeth, removable appliances can be taken out on your own as needed, such as when you are cleaning your teeth. Your treatment plan will be created for you by your orthodontist. In order to find the best plan of action to address the various stages that involve the adjustment of your teeth, you may require removable orthodontic appliances for the best results.
At Petty, Bielik & Burke Orthodontics, P.C., we incorporate elastics, positioners, retainers, and separators into many of our clients’ orthodontic treatments.
Also known as rubber bands, elastics are used to improve the fit of the upper and lower teeth. As long as these are worn as instructed by an orthodontist, patients should see favorable results.
Positioners are used to help maintain and set the results of a separate orthodontic treatment. Typically, patients only need to wear this appliance for between four and eight weeks.
A retainer is meant to hold your teeth in the proper position after your braces come off. This removable appliance is generally worn all of the time after your braces initially are taken off, except when it is removed while you clean your teeth or eat. Eventually, you can just wear your retainer at night. Expect to wear it on a nightly basis for the first year of treatment. Many orthodontists recommend that you continue to wear your retainer at night indefinitely in order to maintain the results of your orthodontic correction.
Also known as spacers, separators are small rubber doughnuts that are used to create separations between the teeth. This gives the teeth additional room to shift their positions during future orthodontic treatments.
