Permanent teeth in adults are embedded deep into the maxilla and mandible, which are the main jaw bones. Unlike in children and teenagers, these powerful bones are very rigid and inelastic. Braces for adults rely heavily on mechanical forces that gradually move teeth and various other supporting structures. The roots, sockets and gum linings of permanent teeth naturally resist any external pressure that may cause movement. In fact, orthodontic treatment in Chicago and elsewhere is almost entirely based on natural bone remodeling rather than any anatomical changes to teeth.
Having a large surface area and multiple branches of roots, molars are also known to cause some challenges for traditional orthodontics. The wisdom teeth, or third molars, might need to get extracted in patients who suffer from a moderate to severe form of crowding. These teeth simply take up too much precious space in dental arches that are already overloaded. Before seeking braces for malocclusion, adults need to fully understand all of the anatomical complications that come with age.
Traditional Braces for Adults
Orthodontic braces for adults are made of metal. These metal materials are durable and strong enough to withstand very high mechanical strain or stress. A biomedical cement is used to directly bond brackets with enamel. Rubber or plastic ties are then applied over the edges of the brackets in order to hold the arch wire. The purpose of the wire is to maintain a fixed tension throughout a given dental arch. Removable rubber bands might also be installed over some teeth that require extra tension for gradual shifting.
Made of ceramic, clear braces are available for some adults. This type of braces for adults is more discreet, but it might only be suitable for correcting spacing in teeth or mild forms of overbites and underbites.
Other Types of Braces for Adults
We are proud to offer a variety of braces for adults, such as self-ligating braces, lingual braces and invisible braces. Each method of treatment offers its own set of benefits. Regardless of the type of treatment that is chosen, adult patients who wear braces are encouraged to brush, floss and maintain excellent oral hygiene in order to avoid any issues.
