It’s finally March, and you know what that means… spring break is right around the corner! During your time off, we hope you get to leave the cold, Chicago weather and enjoy some fun and relaxation.
If you’re planning to travel this spring break, taking a few precautions ahead of time can help keep your orthodontic appliances safe and healthy! Follow these tips from Drs. Petty & Bielik to ensure you have a wonderful, braces-friendly vacation—without any orthodontic mishaps.
Stick to your routine
Because you’re in a new location with a new schedule, it’s easy to forget to follow healthy dental hygiene habits. However, it’s so important that you keep up with those habits. Even if your days are jam-packed, remember to brush twice a day and floss daily to prevent tooth decay. Keep your smile healthy during spring break with good oral hygiene habits!
Pack a braces toolkit
Before you travel, put together a mini toolkit for your braces. That way, you can have access to everything you’ll need to keep your smile in check. Always include a travel toothbrush and toothpaste, floss threaders, orthodontic wax, and rubber bands (if you are currently wearing them). You should also bring small nail clippers—if you have a broken wire, they’re a great resource to have on hand! With your braces toolkit, you’ll always be prepared—no matter how far away you travel.
Traveling can cause people to become dehydrated, which is bad for your teeth and whole-body health. Water irrigates the mouth and rinses away leftover food debris. Whenever you travel, keep a reusable water bottle on hand. Just be sure to empty it before going through TSA security at the airport!
